Palace parks

What better way to spend an afternoon than in a park overlooking some fabulously large palace? Or do you think it's a little bit childish to dream about living in a castle? Well you're wrong! Give in to the romantic notion and spend an afternoon doing something that just feels good.

Bogesunds Palace Park

The gardens are a remnant of the huge garden that thrived there in the 17th century and there is an Arthurian feel about the place. It's fallen in and out of decay throughout the years and is now open to groups and for the public during the summertime.

Drottningholm's Palace Park

This is a royal garden and was inspired by the likes of Versailles, featuring a strictly Baroque style and also a beautiful English park which is right next door. The grounds and the castle are on UNESCO's world heritage list and are open all year round.

Edsbergs Palace Park

A smaller castle park, mainly in the English style, but with other elements such as 17th century walks. During the summertime, an oasis of flowers and the Brygghuset café. Edsvik konst och kultur .
Information: +46 8 92 05 00, take the commuter train to the Sollentuna station, then bus 520 or 527 to Rudbecksskolan, or another alternative is to take bus 525 or 607 to Edsbacka.

Ekebyhovsparken

The grounds at Ekebyhovs Castle are now a nature park featuring some 80 different kinds of trees. There?s a café and, and art exhibitions are held. Information: +46 8 560 392 01. Brommaplan subway station, then bus 311 to Ekebyhovs slott.

Görvälnsparken

Görvelns castle is located in Järfälla on lake Mälaren. The castle grounds feature small paths that wind their way across hilly terrain. There is also a new rose garden and herb garden. During the summer, visitors can enjoy a sculpture exhibition, and take a break from walking in the old hen-house. There's a café, restaurant and banquet room in the castle.

Häringe Palace Park

This castle is set in beautiful surroundings featuring deciduous woodlands, where pastures and stretches of beach are interspersed with high rocky knolls and magnificent oak-covered hills. There's an excellent network of easily accessible walking paths. Information: +46 8 500 404 60. Bus 897 from Västerhaninge. By car, follow route 73 toward Nynäshamn and turn off toward Häringe Slott.

Karlbergs Palace Park

Planned as an intimate little park for the original castle building. The park features among other things the grave of a famous pet dog.Commuter train to the Karlbergs station.

Pipers Park

An English park, situated on the Tivoli peninsula at Brunnsviken. Designed by Fredrik Magnus Piper during the 18th century. The park is of cultural-historical interest, as it has not been altered since it was originally created. Bergshamra subway station.

Rosersbergs Palace Park

A sleepy castle park dating from the 17th century that still bears traces of its glory days. Only guided tours during the summer (May 1-Aug 24), every hour on the hour from 11 to 3. Newly opened café. Information: Managed by Drottningholms "slottsförvaltning", +46 8 590 350 39. Commuter train to Rosersberg.

Rydboholms Palace Park

English park with linden-tree walks and a wild hardwood forest. By car, to the Kulla crossroads, then turn off toward Ryds Kyrka (approx. 1km / 0.6 miles).

Svartsjö Palace Park

A lake and an old romantic castle are right nearby. There's a café in the director's house. Administrated by Statens Fastighetsverk. Brommaplan subway station, then by bus toward Svartsjö.

Taxinge Näsby

Taxinge Castle is located at Gripsholmsviken on Lake Mälaren. The castle features a café with a cake buffet, decorative art and exhibitions in the wings. Information: the Taxinge Castle: +46 159 701 14. Commuter train to Södertälje, bus 780 or 782.

Tullgarns Palace Park

At the innermost end of the deep Gälöfjärden fjord lies Tullgarns Castle, set in a beautiful English park, established during the late-18th century. Only guided tours of the castle during the summer (May 8-Sep 7) daily, every hour on the hour from 11 to 4. You'll also find a restaurant and a café in the stables, where picnic baskets are sold. Tyresö Palace Park

The castle park was established during the 18th century. It is a mixture of an English park, a Swedish flowery meadow and picture out of a fairy tale - with the ancient forest as its ultimate source. Tyresö Castle offers guided tours, and the Tyresö Castle restaurant serves coffee and meals. Information: Tyresö Castle, +46 8 666 46 00; Restaurant, +46 8 770 37 10.
