The Stortorget square (Great Market) is situated in the heart of
Old Town, originally the centre of the city of Stockholm.
From this
beautiful square small narrow streets and alleys fan out in all directions.
Today, Stortorget is quiet and peaceful but in the medieval times it
was a very loud and crowded place of trade.
Facing north: Börsen
- the old Stock Exchange. building houses
the Nobel
Museum on the ground floor.
On the second floor, the chandeliers
are looking down on the Swedish Academy. The Academy is meeting every week and
also elect the winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Facing east,
west and south: Around the square of Stortorget there are several buildings
from around 1650s and one dating back to the early part of the16th century.
Today there are several nice cafées with great atmosphere around the
square, situated in some of the medieval vaulted cellars. |
