The Skeppsbron quay used to be a lively place with merchants,
craftsmen and fishmongers well into first half of the 20th century. Today
it´s a nice place to stroll along with nice views of Stockholm's
waterfront.
Facing east: Af Chapman is the name of the beautiful
fullrigger ship docked along the quai of Skeppsholmen island. She was built in
1888 in Whitehaven, England and sailed as a British cargo vessel until 1908.
Sold to Sweden, she was renamed D G Kennedy. Later, as a training ship for the
Swedish navy, she was again renamed to af Chapman and kept that name when she
became a youth hostel in 1949. The ship got its name from Sweden's leading 18th
century naval architect Fredric Henric af Chapman.
Facing north:
Stockholm's commercial centre lies beyond the Strömbron
bridge.
Facing south: The street is lined with 17th century office
buildings. |
