Slottsbacken connects the Skeppsbron quai with the highest point
of the Old Town.
Facing east: By the water is a statue of Gustav III by
Johan Tobias Sergel, Sweden's foremost 18th century sculptor.
Facing
north (into the palace): Entering by the southern entrance of
the Royal
Palace you have
the Royal
Treasury and the Royal Chapel.
Facing south: Opposite the Royal
Palace are several interesting buildings;
Tessinska Palatset, the
Tessin Palace, acclaimed by many as the most beautiful private residence north
of Paris. In 1697 the Swedish architect Nicodemus Tessin the younger built the
house to himself at the period he was building the Royal Palace across the
street. Today the house is the residence of the Stockholm County Governor.
Next door is
the Royal
Coin Cabinet where you can see the world's largest coin, dating from 1644.
Across from the Royal Coin Cabinet Museum is
the Royal
Armoury Museum in the basement of the palace. |
