Vaxholm

Vaxholm is a small archipelago city with about 4900 permanent residents and many summer guests. Ever since the 1800s, the harbor has been a center for boat traffic and for archipelago life. These days it's a get away for many Stockholmers and others looking for a nice day trip.

The little city is best experienced by walking, and almost everything can be reached on foot. So park the car wherever you can find a parking space and head out. There are restaurants, pastry shops, banks, a post office, liquor store, pharmacy, places to buy clothes, household goods and presents, and so on. A hotel and tourist office is located by the pier on Söderhamnsplan. (Vaxholm Tourist Office +46-8-541 314 80)

There is also a hotel and hostel for those wishing to spend the night.

You can get to Vaxholm by boat, bus, or car. Two bridges link the main island with the mainland. If you'd rather go by boat, then boats leave from Strömkajen near the Grand Hotel (Waxholmsbolaget line) and from Strandvägskajen (Cinderella Boats). Bus number 670 leaves from the Royal Institute of Technology (Tekniska Högskolan, KTH).The boat ride takes about an hour, the bus 40 minutes, and by car it takes about 30 minutes.
