Stockholm on foot

It's easy to see the city on foot. Distances are short and almost everything is pretty and the shop windows are filled with decorations and carefully displayed items that catch the eye. There's water everywhere, people everywhere and boredom was ruled out when subcultures emerged and people started dressing in wonderful outfits. When walking in Stockholm you will find yourself giggling at the thought of a scene from "The Life of Brian" in comparison to all the imaginative get-ups in Stockholm:

Jesus: "You are all individuals!"

Crowd: "We are all individuals!"

Man in crowd: "I'm not!"

This is so true in Stockholm, because the "idea" of being an individual and being yourself has completely taken over and now everyone is an individual. It's fun and freeing and certainly gives you some perspective. Stride on!

Where to walk

South side
The south side offers a million different beautiful walks, and is considered the alternative to stylish Östermalm. Here the kids have dreadlocks and skate down the streets. It's the cool of the city. The Southern heights, Söders Höjder, are filled with cobble stone streets and miniature houses fit for a fairy tale. The parks there also offer refuge from the city life and are perfect for sitting down and relaxing, that's what they're there for!

If it's city ife on the bohemian south side you're looking for then getting off at Slussen will put you right where the action is. From there, walk up Götgatan and then land on Medborgarplatsen, where you will find cafes and pubs and literally hundreds of people every hour of the day/night in the summer. The music from the bar Snaps on Medborgarplatsen is free for all and can easily be enjoyed by people milling around outside, and there are always many! This part of town also offers a lot of cheap eats, so take your pick and enjoy.

If the wallet won't allow any commuting, then the walk from T-Centralen is still a breeze. Just walk south on Drottninggatan (towards the Old Town), continue on Västerlånggatan and then up the hill and there you've just hit Götgatan. See sights for more info on tourist attractions on the south side. The most beautiful ones are free!

Old town
This is the place for milling around. The houses have a playful tilt and the cobble stones feel good underfoot. This is the oldest part of the city and the history literally seeps through it's pores. To get there you either take the subway to Gamla Stan or walk from T-Centralen along Drottninggatan until you hit the smell of waffles. Check this link out to see what else the Old Town has to offer.

Central
When getting dumped from the airport, this is where you'll land. Most people don't hang around very long since the central is usually only a place used as a means to an end. Getting from point A to point B, but just a few blocks in either direction will get you feeling right as rain. Nice places to walk to include Hötorget, where there's a great market during the day with loud bartering and knickknacks galore and down to Berzeli Park, where there is usually some event or other going on especially during the summer.

Vasastan
This is a quieter neighborhood perfect for strolls and relaxing. If you're taking the subway, get off either at Odenplan or St. Eriksplan. If walking from the Central, head up Drottninggatan north, then swing right on Kungsgatan and the steer left again when you hit Sveavägen. Continue this way until you hit the intersection of Sveavägen and Odengatan, and head left up the little hill. Then you'll hit Odenplan, and continuing on Odengatan will put you past Vasaparken (a great park) and then bring you to St. Eriksplan. There you can head in on Rörstrandsgatan and check out the pubs. A place on the corner called India Lord offers pretty cheap Indian style cuisine, and the fruit market across the street has everything you could want in ways of fruit at very cheap prices.

East
Even if your wallet is of the light variety, there's no reason not to see how the other half lives. The east side, or Östermalm, is the fanciest part of town. Here people wear fancy cloths and have fancy dogs. The up-scale Biblioteksgatan even has a red carpet going on. To get here you either hop off the subway at Östermalmstorg or walk from the Central. If you'll be walking, take Drottninggatan north then turn right on Kungsgatan and continue down that way. You'll quickly find yourself in chic-city and know by all the Louis Vuitton bags hanging on every other shoulder.
